Health officials predict there may be smoking bans in every state by 2020, if trend continues

ATLANTA (AP) -- By 2020, every state may have bans on smoking in restaurants, bars and the workplace, federal health officials predicted Thursday, based on the current pace of adopting anti-smoking laws.


The number of states with comprehensive indoor smoking bans went from zero in 2000 to 25 in 2010.


"It is by no means a foregone conclusion that we'll get there by 2020," said Dr. Tim McAfee, director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health.

Appeals court revives Blackwater shooting case

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An appeals court on Friday resurrected the case against four Blackwater Worldwide guards involved in a 2007 shooting in a Baghdad public square that killed 17 Iraqi citizens.


A federal trial judge in Washington, Ricardo Urbina, threw out the case on New Year's Eve 2009 after he found the Justice Department mishandled evidence and violated the guards' constitutional rights.

Apple files suit against Samsung

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Apple Inc. has sued Samsung Electronics Co., saying the South Korean company's Galaxy line of smartphones and tablet computers copy Apple's popular iPad and iPhone.


In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Apple alleges the product design, user interface and packaging of the Galaxy products "slavishly copy" Apple.


"When a Samsung Galaxy phone is used in public, there can be little doubt that it would be viewed as an Apple product based upon the design alone," Apple says in its lawsuit, which was filed Friday.

Woman's abduction consumes western Tenn. community

PARSONS, Tenn. (AP) -- Whether they are grabbing coffee, sitting down for a meal or filling their pickup trucks with gas, people in this western Tennessee town are talking about the abduction of 20-year-old Holly Bobo.


Those who know the nursing student with blond hair and a big smile say they don't know what's more shocking: that anyone in this community about 100 miles northeast of Memphis would be abducted or that it would happen to someone like her.


"That's what's so surprising: that it's her," said Robert McCoy, who goes to nursing school with her at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Flight 93 families seek money for 9/11 memorial

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Families of those who died on United Airlines Flight 93 said Wednesday they hope Congress won't forget the heroism displayed aboard the hijacked flight as it considers giving more federal money for a 9/11 memorial at the crash site in Pennsylvania.


Family members said they're reminding lawmakers that if not for the heroic actions of those on the plane, members of Congress could have been among the victims on Sept. 11, 2001.

China used less energy per unit of GDP in 2010

SHANGHAI (AP) -- China's efforts to reduce energy consumption per unit of economic output were less successful in 2010 with the reduction far less than achieved in the previous year.


The National Bureau of Statistics said Monday that energy intensity - energy use per unit of gross domestic product - fell 4 percent last year from 2009.


The bureau released the figure in an annual report of economic statistics posted on its website. It said the percentage decline was measured in terms of energy use per 10,000 yuan ($1,520) of GDP, but gave no specific figure.

Ethiopia Revokes License of US Adoption Agency

Ethiopia has revoked the license of an American adoption agency, accusing it of child trafficking. The agency has responded sharply, charging it is the victim of government retaliation.




Ethiopia's Charities and Societies Agency has notified the Minnesota-based Better Future Adoptions Services that its license to operate in the country has been revoked.


The revocation could effectively shut down the agency, which specializes in adoptions from Ethiopia.


A copy of the revocation notice obtained by VOA accuses Better Future of falsifying documents to claim orphan status for children whose parents are still alive. The notification letter, dated December 9 last year, says the fraud was organized in collaboration with orphanages, but does not identify them.

High blood pressure, obesity linked to memory loss in elderly

Older people who have larger waistlines, high blood pressure and other risk factors associated with a condition doctors call "metabolic syndrome" may be at higher risk of memory problems, a new study suggests.


In the large French study, older adults with metabolic syndrome were 20% more likely to have cognitive decline on a memory test than those without it.


"Our study sheds new light on how metabolic syndrome and the individual factors of the disease may affect cognitive health," said study author Christelle Raffaitin, of the French National Institute of Health Research in Bordeaux, France. "Our results suggest that management of metabolic syndrome may help slow down age-related memory loss, or delay the onset of dementia."

A strict diet may help the Leipzig Zoo's opossum Heidi to lose the crossed eyes that have made her an international attraction.


The overweight white-haired opossum has been on a steady diet of lettuce, carrots and lean chicken to cut down on her fat -- which is thought to be the cause of her crossed eyes, a Leipzig Zoo spokeswoman said on Monday.


"Heidi has been on a diet since she arrived last May," spokeswoman Maria Saegebarth said. "Her eyes could go back to normal but at this moment we don't know."


More Countries Help Citizens Flee Egypt

More countries are sending planes to evacuate their citizens from the unrest in Egypt, as leaders from around the world call on President Hosni Mubarak to seek a peaceful resolution to the week-long anti-government protests.


U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Janice Jacobs told reporters that the first U.S.-government sponsored flight will be leaving Cairo Monday.


China's state television reported that a plane is on its way to start transporting the more than 500 Chinese nationals at the Cairo airport. Azerbaijan, India, Iraq, Japan and Turkey are among the nations that sent planes Sunday.
